Brief on the organisation
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) was set up under an Act of Parliament in January 2020. The prime objective of the HEC is to monitor and oversee the higher education sector. The Commission is responsible to promote the development of higher education, ensure high quality learning, encourage academic research, and support the development of a cultural life.
In furtherance of its regulatory functions, the Commission is mandated, inter-alia, to register higher education institutions and accredit their programmes; undertake periodic accreditation audits of HEIs; determine recognition and equivalence of academic and professional qualifications.
The vision of the HEC is to make higher education a key pillar of the national economy and to position Mauritius as the foremost destination for students in the region.
The mission of the HEC is to be a modern and responsive regulatory body for Higher Education in Mauritius. We oversee standards, quality, and the appropriate use of research to enable inclusive and innovative higher education and research that meets local and regional needs whilst providing high quality online experience.
The HEC prioritizes research and innovation as fundamental objectives to enhance the quality of higher education and drive national development. By fostering a robust research culture, the HEC aims to produce knowledge that addresses both local and global challenges, contributing to the socio-economic progress of Mauritius.
