Seychelles
Overview
The Republic of Seychelles (or Seychelles) is an archipelago located in the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar and about 1,600 kilometers east of Kenya. Seychelles is renowned for its pristine natural beauty and rich biodiversity. Seychelles consists of 115 islands with an estimated population of 130,886 [1]. Most of the inhabitants reside on the main island of Mahé, where the capital city, Victoria, is also located.
The economy of Seychelles is highly dependent on tourism and fishing and is heavily impacted on by climate change, overfishing and environment degradation [2]. Pollution, such as plastic waste and untreated sewage, can tarnish the natural beauty of beaches and marine environments, reducing their appeal to tourists. Moreover, a high influx of tourists can cause environmental strain, such as habitat destruction and increased waste, which can lower the quality of the tourist experience and damage local ecosystems.
The dependence of the economy on fishing has driven unsustainable practices, leading to the depletion of crucial fish stocks. This depletion jeopardizes both the livelihoods of local fishermen and the overall health of marine ecosystems. Marine pollution, such as oil spills, plastic waste and chemical runoff, can damage fish populations and marine habitats.
